Toyota Motor Europe (TME) and Stellantis have made an announcement about their new collaboration. With the agreement for a new large-sized commercial van, they are expanding their existing partnership. This collaboration will cover both the conventional and battery-electric versions of the van. According to the press release, TME, a subsidiary of Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp, will supply the new vehicle for sale in Europe under the Toyota brand. Although, Stellantis’ new large commercial van will be manufactured in Gliwice, Poland, and Atessa, Italy.
The two companies are currently working together on a compact and a mid-size Stellantis light commercial vehicle. Large-size vans are the third vehicle type included in the agreement, completing the line-up of large commercial vehicles (LCVs). “With this third successful engagement, Stellantis is further demonstrating its expertise in the commercial vehicle segment and in developing battery electric technology built to support a wide range of needs,” said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis.
This agreement also marks TME’s first foray into the large-size commercial vehicle segment. The large commercial van is scheduled to be released in mid-2024.
Advantages of Stellantis and Toyota Motor Europe’s (TME) Large Commercial Van Partnership
The agreement between Stellantis and Toyota Motor Europe (TME) allows both companies to benefit from vehicle development and operational efficiencies. Also, the partnership allows for better usage of Stellantis’ Atessa plant. This plant currently produces large commercial vans under the Peugeot, Citroen, and Fiat brands.
Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, discussed the significance of the two companies’ collaboration. “This agreement strengthens our leadership in the EU30 for LCVs and low emission vehicles and brings us one step closer to realising our Dare Forward 2030 goal,” he said. By 2030, the company intends to be the undisputed global leader in light commercial vehicle technology, manufacturing, market share, and profitability.
Toyota Motor Europe’s President and CEO, Matt Harrison, has also described the partnership as an important contributor to Toyota’s growth targets. Harrison also stated that the agreement enabled the company to offer a mobility solution in all sectors of the LCV market. Additionally, purchasers of the large commercial van will benefit from cutting-edge, zero-emission technology in each LCV segment supplied by Stellantis.
However, this is not the companies’ first collaboration. The first time the two companies worked together, a mid-sized Toyota LCV was produced by Stellantis’ Hordain Plant in France in 2012,. Following the initial launch, Stellantis’ plant in Vigo, Spain, added the compact-size LCV segment in 2019.
Implication of The Large Commercial Van Collaboration for The Auto Industry
This collaboration marks yet another defining moment for automakers. Car manufacturers are increasingly making cross-manufacturing agreements in order to reduce costs on vans. This is because, the vans are in higher demand than ever. This increase in demand is largely due to the surge in parcel delivery. Electric vehicles are also in high demand for quick deliveries.
This new development benefits the auto transport industry by encouraging more people to buy large commercial vans. The trucking industry is facing an increase in the demand for car shipping. Additionally, the rising cost of gas influences car shipping prices.
